Authorities in Milwaukee are addressing the rise of street takeovers, also known as “sideshows,” which involve dangerous driving and large crowds. According to the Statement of Alderman Scott Spiker released by the City of Milwaukee, Urban Milwaukee reports that city officials are considering stronger measures to deter participants and spectators, including arresting those involved, impounding vehicles, and partnering with agencies such as the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office.
Fining spectators is already in place, but officials believe these penalties must be more impactful. One official stated that municipal tickets need to carry more weight. The city is also exploring a strategy of focusing on one takeover at a time, using arrests and vehicle seizures to set an example for others.
Limited staffing poses a challenge, and officials acknowledge the need for coordination between multiple law enforcement agencies to make the plan effective. The message to those attending is clear: if a takeover is targeted by authorities, those present may face arrests, fines, and vehicle impoundments.
The approach reflects an effort to curb street takeovers through stronger enforcement and coordinated action while the city works on balancing public safety and community activity.
