Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, along with local leaders, kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month by unveiling a special bus design. The new bus, created in partnership with Latino Arts, Inc. and Lamar Transit Advertising, celebrates the contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. It began service the same day and will run on various MCTS routes for the next year, according to the Milwaukee County.

Crowley was quoted expressing pride at the launch event held at Walker Square Park. “I am proud that this beautifully-designed bus will ride along our roads as a reflection of the County’s commitment to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and advancing our mission to achieve equity in all measurable areas,” he stated. He further acknowledged the significant contribution of Hispanic and Latino people with their “unwavering commitment to family, faith, hard work, and service.” The bus is crowned with the message “¡Te Amo MKE!” (“I Love You, Milwaukee!”), aiming to both celebrate and draw all communities to partake in this rich cultural homage, as told by Milwaukee County's official news announcement.

This celebration of Hispanic and Latino culture is tangible in the bus's visuals, featuring artistic representations of Latin America and the Caribbean's diverse musical, dance, and artistic lineages. The design was brought to life by Jacobo Lovo, Managing Artistic Director at Latino Arts, with assistance from graphic designer Melenie Gonzalez of Latino Arts, Inc. and the United Community Center. Latino Arts, renowned for their focus on cultural arts and programming, plays a large role in honoring the Hispanic/Latino identity that weaves through Milwaukee’s communities. “This bus design honors the cultural traditions we highlight through our programming, dedicated to the arts and education, while celebrating the many talented artists we have the privilege of working with as we honor our heritage,” Lovo said in a statement, as stated by the Milwaukee County.

At the bus unveiling, County Executive David Crowley also declared September as Hispanic Heritage Month in Milwaukee County. This month honors the contributions of Hispanic and Latino residents and has been celebrated nationwide since 1968, starting on September 15—Independence Day for five Latin American countries. The new “¡Te Amo MKE!” bus is more than just transportation; it’s a rolling tribute to culture, inviting everyone in Milwaukee to celebrate Hispanic and Latino heritage.
