In the wake of recent shootings and ongoing violence, Minneapolis has partnered with The Family Partnership to establish a temporary Neighborhood Assistance Center. Aiming to provide a secure place for those affected by the city's violent incidents, the center at 1527 East Lake St. will offer a range of free services, including mental health support and information for victims. Operating from Sept. 18 to Sept. 21, this initiative is a testament to the city's commitment to aid its residents in crisis.

According to information released by The City of Minneapolis, Mayor Jacob Frey emphasized the city's dedication, stating, "Minneapolis is making sure every impacted neighbor has a safe place to turn for support." The center, open on varying afternoons and mornings, boasts resources such as trauma care, health support, and services tailored for the unsheltered. Visitors can also get information on human trafficking prevention and household safety. Despite the pressing need for these services, the need to address violence-induced trauma and its aftermath remains poignant and pressing.

The effort to assist those without shelter is a larger strategy in response to pressing safety and health concerns, including a recent shooting that injured seven. City officials have taken down the encampment at 28th Avenue South and East Lake Street and announced steps in their ongoing commitment, focusing on public health and safety. "The Neighborhood Resource Center would not be possible without The Family Partnership’s generous offer to provide space and all of our community partners who are offering valuable resources to our community members," said Rachel Sayre, Emergency Management director for the City of Minneapolis.

The city prides itself on progress made in reducing unsheltered homelessness rates, pointing to a significant 33.5% decrease since 2020. Yet, it recognizes the need for continued action, working with county partners and service providers to further aid affected individuals. Following the Lake Street Encampment's closure, organizations such as NextStep, Hennepin County's Streets to Housing Team, and the Minneapolis Homeless Response Team have mobilized to offer shelter, medical aid, and reunification with pets, among other services.

For more details on the services provided at the Neighborhood Assistance Center, or insight into efforts to support the unsheltered, interested parties can visit the City of Minneapolis website. The city urges those in need or those who know someone who may benefit from these resources to reach out during the center's hours of operation.
