Minneapolis is gearing up for a touch of nostalgia, and senior voices are leading the charge at the city's iconic Aquatennial festival. Established back in 1940, the "City of Lakes" has long celebrated its watery connections with events that boast parades and pageantry galore. In a slightly more subdued – but equally valued – corner of the festivities, the Minneapolis Aquatennial Senior Association, a non-profit coalition of senior community members, is setting the stage for yet another heartwarming performance.
Founded in 1979, the senior association embraces the fundamental role that elders play in the fabric of our towns and cities, and their upcoming singalong event is no less than a vibrant embodiment of this principle. The Mary Ann Young Center will echo with the tunes of yesteryear, as the group is set to deliver a series of performances, catering to both their peers and anyone with an ear for timeless music. The center, thanks to the efforts of MAYC member Marlene Jenson, is expected to be awash with hits from the World War II era alongside lively billboard chart-toppers of the past.
According to the City of Blaine's official announcement, attendees can anticipate renditions of patriotic songs like “This is My Country,” and other memorable tracks, including “Never Be Anyone Else But You” and Bing Crosby’s “Swinging on a Star.” For the seniors who volunteer and perform, these songs are more than just melodies; they are a bridge to the past, a shared cultural touchstone, and, of course, a sheer pleasure to sing and listen to.
The invitation is open to all to join for lunch, and to come early at 11AM on Tuesday, September 9th – to ensure a good seat and enjoy an atmosphere steeped in camaraderie and song. It's an opportunity for community members of all ages to enjoy a throwback to the classics, and a showcase of talent that refuses to acknowledge the passage of time. Whether you're a senior, a fan of the oldies, or just someone looking to enjoy an upbeat morning, this event promises to strike a chord.
