A tragic incident unfolded on Saturday as a motorcyclist was killed in a crash on eastbound Interstate 70 in Glenwood Canyon, prompting a hours-long closure of the highway. The Colorado State Patrol revealed, in details obtained by 9News, that the crash occurred just before 4:30 p.m. east of Glenwood Springs, with no involvement from any other vehicles.
Following the crash, eastbound lanes of I-70 were closed at mile marker 116, as reported by the Post Independent, which did not provide a specific timeframe for the reopening of the interstate. However, the transportation artery was eventually reopened by 7:45 pm, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation, allowing traffic to resume its normal flow.
The late-afternoon accident led to a swift response from authorities. FOX31 reached out to Colorado State Patrol and confirmed it was a single-vehicle accident involving a motorcyclist. The Garfield County Emergency Communications Authority updated the public, stating that the roads were open as of 7:50 pm. Officers had cleared the scene by the time the updates rolled out to commuters and the broader community.
As of now, the deceased motorcyclist's identity and the specific events leading up to the accident remain undisclosed. "There is no word on the identification of the motorcyclist who died, and what led up to the crash," said a spokesperson for the Colorado State Patrol, as per FOX31. Nonetheless, authorities continue to investigate the circumstances that culminated in this tragic event, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
