Responding to President Donald Trump's latest saber-rattling, Multnomah County Chair Jessica Vega Pederson has taken a firm stance against the threat of military intervention in Portland. In a statement released by Multnomah County, Pederson criticized the President, saying, "We’ve seen this before. President Trump wasting your tax dollars to attack cities who value diversity and stand up for our immigrant and refugee neighbors." She labeled the potential deployment of troops as "uncalled for and unnecessary," backing up her words with data indicating a decline in violent crimes within the city.
Indeed, this isn't a first rodeo for Trump nor Portland when it comes to such threats. The President's tactics have been a recurring theme during his term. Portland, as Vega Pederson's statement emphasizes, has been witnessing a downswing in violent incidents, contradicting any rationale behind Trump's alarmist narrative. "Recent reports show that Portland has seen a rapid decline in homicides and other violent crime this year, and crime has been trending downward overall for multiple years," Vega Pederson told the public in her statement, as per Multnomah County's official website.
There's no hiding the critique in Vega Pederson's words when it comes to the President's policies either. According to Multnomah County, she lays bare the impact of the "callous cuts to public health and safety net services like Medicaid," which she insists have exacerbated issues faced by the residents of both red and blue states, including mounting costs of living essentials such as "food, housing and medicine."
While Vega Pederson's response isn't without recognition of the importance of federal collaboration, it comes with a clear caveat. “Multnomah County is a beautiful and proud place. We welcome genuine cooperation that would improve the lives of hard-working County residents, protect our Constitutional rights and bring us together to help our community thrive,” she elaborated. According to the Multnomah County's official website, the statement leaves the door open for aid, but firmly shuts it on any measures that would cause "more harm and chaos" – an issue she seems to associate closely with the president's offer of 'help.'
Multnomah County and President Trump are involved in a dispute, according to local officials. Portland Mayor Vega Pederson stated the matter, which is available on Multnomah County's official website.
