The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office recently held its annual awards ceremony to commend the exceptional efforts of its staff, law enforcement associates, and members of the community, according to their official release. Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O'Donnell highlighted the importance of acknowledging the courage and selflessness that characterize the office. "These ceremonies give us a chance to recognize the incredible courage and selfless acts that define the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office," O'Donnell remarked, underscoring the department's values of presence, connection, inspiration, and pride.
Rewards bestowed at the annual function covered achievements and notable incidents from the previous year. Among the multitude of awards, the MCSO doled out 10 commendation letters, 30 citations, and recognized 21 instances of lifesaving heroics spread across eight critical incidents. The process of selecting awardees involved an internal MCSO Awards Committee that reviewed nominations and deferred its recommendations to the executive team for final decisions.
Noteworthy during the ceremony was the introduction of the Meritorious Service Medal, awarded to four individuals exemplifying exceptional service spanning continuously. Moreover, the MCSO gave out recognition to several law enforcement members and public safety community figures in connection with their response to a plane crash in Fairview, Oregon, which had previously drawn national attention.
As first responders dealt with the devastating Fairview plane crash in August of the preceding year, the MCSO action did not falter. Deputies reportedly took initiative by evacuating residents and tackling flames with garden hoses before fire crews could take over. Following the event, residents expressed gratitude for the compassionate approach taken by the MCSO deputies, noted the MCSO's press statement. "This unexpected emergency demonstrated that our deputies coordinate and manage crises with compassion above all else," said Sheriff O'Donnell, commending her team’s dedication.
A highlight of the ceremony was the inauguration of the Major James Turney Award, honoring a retired MCSO executive leader. A deputy received this accolade for consistently displaying a genuine concern for the wellbeing of their peers, reflecting the organization's commitment to safety, trust, collaboration, and empowerment. The Sheriff's Office has released photos from the awards ceremony and invites media outlets to use the images, with attribution to the MCSO.
