Following a significant lapse in judicial procedure, Multnomah County Sheriff Nicole Morrisey O’Donnell announced the apprehension of 26-year-old Ty Sage, wanted for charges of second-degree murder and first-degree robbery. As detailed in a statement released by the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office, Sage's capture came with the support of the United States Marshals Service (USMS) Fugitive Task Force, culminating without incident at a Florence gas station along Highway 101 on Thursday, September 25, 2025.
"Ty Sage should never have been able to post bail," Sheriff Morrisey O’Donnell lamented in the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office release. She continued, acknowledging the anguish of the victim's family: "To the family of Lowgunn Ivey, the young man killed, I want to acknowledge the fear and trauma that this mistaken release has caused." Sage was mistakenly allowed to post bail on September 22, despite the grave nature of his offences—a procedural error that has since been met with internal inquiry.
The original court documents, as reported by the sheriff's office, indict Sage on counts of serious criminality, with the indictment dating back to May 13, 2025. Yet, a murder bail hearing held on September 17 appeared to have erroneously resulted in an opportunity for Sage to be released from custody. It wasn't until September 23 that the Multnomah County Sheriff's Office was made aware of Sage’s release.
Emphasizing that MCSO staff had sought clarification on the murky court order, Sheriff Morrisey O’Donnell admitted, "Although MCSO employees acted in good faith and sought clarification with the court, Sage was still allowed to post bail – that should not have happened." The sheriff committed to learning from the incident and fortifying processes within her department to prevent future lapses. Sage is now being held on a no-bail hold at the Multnomah County Detention Center, ensuring no immediate risk of another erroneous release.
In a gesture of responsibility and transparency, Sheriff Morrisey O’Donnell personally conveyed the news of Sage’s arrest to the Ivey family, certainly a small solace in the face of their tragedy. The sheriff’s office also extended gratitude, per the announcement, to law enforcement partners, including the U.S. Marshals Service and local police departments, who ensured Sage's quick re-apprehension and worked tirelessly in pursuit of justice in this case.
