
The New Orleans Police Department has confirmed the arrest of a suspect in connection with a recent homicide. Wallace Gilmore, identified as a black male born September 22, 1976, was apprehended on charges stemming from a fatal shooting incident.
According to the NOPD, officers were dispatched to the 2700 block of Lasalle Street on the afternoon of September 22, upon receiving reports of gunfire, at the scene, they found an adult male who had sustained a gunshot wound, the man was subsequently taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries leading to the case being escalated to a homicide investigation. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office named the victim as 59-year-old Willie Lemar Jr., and concluded gunshot-related injuries as the preliminary cause of death, as reported on the official NOPD News website.
Further inquiries by the NOPD Homicide Section detectives allowed for the identification of Gilmore as the prime suspect, and an arrest warrant on a count of second-degree murder was subsequently issued. NOPD Homicide Section detectives, alongside Sixth District officers and the Violent Crime Abatement and Investigative Team, located Gilmore and took him into custody the following day, according to the department’s official statement.
Gilmore was discovered and detained on September 24 in the 3000 block of Freret Street; he is expected to face charges relevant to his arrest at the Orleans Justice Center. This development in the case reflects the NOPD's ongoing commitment to addressing violent crime in the community and ensuring justice for victims and their families.
