The N.C. Turnpike Authority's inauguration of the Complete 540 Phase 1 has been recognized as a finalist for the prestigious national transportation award by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), as reported on September 23rd. It has emerged as one of the "Top 12" projects in the 2025 America's Transportation Awards. North Carolina stands a chance to direct a $10,000 prize to a charity or scholarship fund, provided it garners enough support through online votes.
The People's Choice Award, along with the Grand Prize (which is decided by a panel of judges), invites the public to cast their votes online for the favorite project. Complete 540 Phase 1 could benefit a charity or scholarship fund with their victory, and eager North Carolinians can make their mark by voting. According to the NCDOT news release, voting for the People's Choice Award is simple enough—just visit the America's Transportation Awards website and submit your vote. Voting is open until 11:59 p.m. on November 17, with the ability to vote once per day, per device.
Since its official opening to traffic on September 25, 2024, Complete 540 Phase 1 has served as a vital corridor for 1.44 million travelers, connecting southern Wake County to essential highways such as I-40 and U.S. 401. This extension of the Triangle Expressway has not only enhanced travel times but has incorporated state-of-the-art traffic management systems and sustainable practices which are narrated in the opening of the new roadway.
NCTA continues to play an integral role in keeping up with North Carolina's evolving transportation needs. They have been at the forefront of toll facility planning and implementation, particularly communities that request them, as detailed in the original release. The Triangle Expressway notably stands out as the country's first toll road to employ all-electronic tolling technology from the get-go, reflecting their commitment to innovation and customer-focused service.
