Chaos ensued on the 405 Freeway Thursday evening as a multi-vehicle crash involving a Santa Monica motorcycle officer prompted a shutdown of the northbound lanes, and traffic quickly backed up for miles. KTLA reports that the collision on the 405 at Roscoe Boulevard brought LAPD officers to the scene, where they found the motorcycle officer lying in the carpool lane around 8 p.m.
It was afterwards confirmed by the Santa Monica Police Department that the officer, who was off-duty at the time of the accident, was returning home on his department-issued motorcycle. NBC Los Angeles states that the officer sustained only minor injuries from the crash, and a full recovery is expected.
No other motorists were reported injured, as per KTLA. It remained unclear how long the northbound lanes of the freeway would stay closed as authorities continued their investigation and crews worked to clear the scene.
