Superintendent Ryan Walters is steering Oklahoma towards a literary resurgence with a hefty $3,000,000 injection into statewide tutoring efforts. The initiative, announced earlier this week, targets students struggling with reading and aims to bring them up to speed with both urban and rural programs. According to a statement on the Oklahoma State Department of Education website, these funds will fuel research-based, small-group tutoring finely tuned to the Science of Reading and the Oklahoma Academic Standards.
In Walters' own words, "Literacy is the foundation for everything our students learn, the bottom line is: if you can’t read you can’t be successful." His approach promises not just investment but a commitment to traceable results and equal opportunity. Each of a hundred rural districts will benefit from $10,000 grants, part of the Rural Literacy Acceleration Initiative, to amplify their current literacy programs. This includes covering costs for instructional materials and teacher stipends, with districts receiving reimbursement based on successful implementation.
Tulsa Public Schools (TPS) have been allotted $1,000,000 for the launch of TPS READS, a program bent on bolstering literacy and math proficiency for students in grades 1–8. "We’re grateful for this investment and committed to using these resources to accelerate learning, with a clear focus on student outcomes and academic momentum," TPS Superintendent Dr. Ebony Johnson conveyed. Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) will also see a similar $1,000,000 boon for Project LIFT, a collaboration aimed at early literacy improvements for 1st to 4th graders.
OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Jamie Polk emphasized the significance of the state department's investment, explaining, "By providing structured, data-driven support, Project LIFT helps ensure every child builds the skills and confidence needed to thrive in school and beyond." The focus on high-dosage, research-based tutoring modalities addresses large literacy skill gaps that might otherwise impede student success.
