Oklahoma City is taking a stand against youth violence through the formation of a Youth Safety Advisory Committee (YSAC). The new committee is a collaboration between the OKCPD and Public Safety Partnership, established to delve into the root causes of youth violence and discover new methods for supporting the young people most at risk. With monthly meetings already underway, the YSAC is pooling expertise from various sectors that are deeply ingrained in the community's fabric, according to city officials.
As reported by okc.gov, Andrea Grayson, the OKC Public Safety Partnership Implementation Manager, highlighted the importance of this initiative: "These committee members and their related organizations provide the background and expertise needed to develop long-term solutions that address the critically important issue of youth violence in our community." Grayson emphasized the committee's duty to identify acute youth violence needs in OKC and explore effective programs that encompass mediation, conflict resolution, and early intervention.
According to the okc.gov, the committee's establishment fulfills recommendations 27 and 28 out of a 39-point plan presented to the City Council last year, focusing on neighborhood safety and the interruption of violence circuits within communities. OKC Mayor David Holt shared insight into the imperative for alternative strategies outside of law enforcement. "A significant driver of violence in the community is youth violence, and we have to recognize that reducing it requires intervention and prevention," Mayor Holt told reporters.
To effectively address the complex issue of youth violence, the YSAC has outlined several goals. These include performing an extensive scan of community assets and programs, reviewing evidence-based models for youth violence intervention, engaging with stakeholders from across the social spectrum, advising the City on the future design of a youth violence intervention framework, and issuing recommendations for a Request for Information (RFI) to identify a community-based organization to possibly implement an intervention strategy. The diverse composition of the committee, featuring individuals and organizations with a broad range of perspectives, demonstrates the city's commitment to a multifaceted approach in treating the societal ailment of youth violence with due gravity.
