Commuters in the Oklahoma City area are facing a gauntlet of construction-related lane reductions that are set to impact a number of major highways and thoroughfares. According to the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, westbound I-40 will be constricted to one lane from Sooner Rd. to S.E. 29th St. from 7 p.m. Thursday to 6 a.m. Friday, while north and southbound US-77 will also be squeezed to a single lane between Robinson St. and Tecumseh Rd. during the same hours for continuing work in the area.
Alongside these short-term pains, there are ongoing projects stretching well into 2025 and beyond. The east and westbound I-40 at Douglas Blvd. in Midwest City will remain narrowed to two lanes in each direction with intermittent ramp closures through the rest of the year. Motorists should be prepared for the narrow lanes, or they could consider alternate routes via I-240 and US-62/N. 23rd St. Similar ongoing work will see SH-9W at I-35 in Norman reduced through 2026 to carve out a Diverging Diamond Interchange and widen lanes.
For those looking ahead, a few relief points are in sight. Anderson Rd., which saw closure, is now open. However, the next few months still promise to be trying for local traffic, with SH-4 between Wilshire Blvd. and SH-3/NW Expressway in the throes of alignment switches and Hefner Rd. closed due to drainage installation. Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes where possible.
In further details obtained by the Oklahoma Department of Transportation, Danforth Rd. and Kelly Ave. in Edmond are also facing lane reductions through Spring 2026 due to intersection expansion in partnership with the city. Meanwhile, SH-9E near US-77 in Norman will see intermittent narrows due to bridge replacement till fall 2025, and travelers are advised to plan for additional travel time, especially during home football games and major events.
