As Oklahoma schools open their doors to students for the new academic year, the state's Department of Education is using the occasion to cast a spotlight on sweeping educational reforms. According to a release on the Oklahoma State Department of Education website, these changes are set to position parents at the helm, beef up academic standards, and peel back federal red tape.
Referencing the past year, Oklahoma has implemented an update to the history curriculum emphasizing the "historical significance" of the Bible and its role in the founding of the United States. With a nod to increased transparency, the state has taken strides in empowering parents with school choice measures, which, according to state officials, provides parents with an unprecedented influence in their children’s education. Simultaneously, the once-mandated federal end-of-year exams have been replaced with new assessments designed to track student growth throughout the year, as reported by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
There’s a financial aspect to the reform too, directing schools to funnel more funding into the classroom, meanwhile trimming down on administrative expenditures. In a bid to bolster patriotic instruction, the state has certified over 4,000 educators under the "America First" banner, as declared by officials, with a focus on setting the academic environment free of what they described as 'woke politics', as per the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
"President Trump has made it clear, education should be driven by parents, local communities, and common sense, not federal bureaucrats," stated Walters, without specifying a first name or title. Oklahoma seems to have taken this to heart, venturing to become a forerunner for the rest of the nation in this educational reform wave. Alongside these changes, there's a commitment the state officials mention which pivots on defending parental rights and religious freedom while upholding "President Trump's America first agenda," as stated by the Oklahoma State Department of Education.
