Oregon's Department of Motor Vehicles is rolling out new service enhancements set to take effect this October, with the promise of a more efficient experience for customers. In a dual effort to manage queues and encourage preparedness, the DMV announced a series of strategic shifts, including a pilot program for appointment-only days and a cap on the number of knowledge tests customers can take daily.
Starting October 2nd, Bend's DMV will be appointment-only on Thursdays, with the other days of the week still open for walk-ins. Following suit, both the Corvallis office and the South Salem location will require appointments on Wednesdays beginning October 8. By October 13, Junction City and Springfield offices will be running an appointment-only model. A recent bulletin highlighted, "By offering appointment-only days in these offices, you can book an appointment online on DMV2U, show up at your designated time and be confident you’ll be served."
Limits on knowledge testing are also on the horizon. From October 1st, customers will be restricted to two attempts per day for both the Class C knowledge tests and motorcycle endorsement knowledge tests at physical DMV locations. This change addresses instances of customers taking numerous tests in a single day, an action that suggests reliance on chance rather than actual knowledge to pass. The DMV's shift aligns the in-office rules with its online test-taking protocol. Testing the waters with a $7 fee per attempt, the strategy serves as a nudge for Oregonians to study up on their driving manuals before sitting for the test.
Apart from better managing traffic at the DMV offices, these alterations aim to support DMV staff in providing a higher quality of assistance to customers. Anticipating the success of the pilot, the agency may expand the appointment-only model to additional locations. "We always recommend people make an appointment to be confident they’ll be served or see if they can complete their transaction on DMV2U," DMV Administrator Amy Joyce was cited from the Oregon Department of Transportation bulletin. In an increasingly digital world, the DMV also touts more than 20 services online, advocating for its customers to take advantage of these options and, in turn, decreasing the in-person line load.
The DMV remains prepared to assist those customers without internet access or who face difficulties with the online scheduling system. During operating hours, DMV Customer Assistance agents are available at 503-945-5000 to provide support.
