Oregon has rolled out a coordinated strategy to ensure residents have affordable and uninterrupted access to vaccinations ahead of the respiratory virus season. Governor Tina Kotek directed the initiative in response to earlier disruptions in vaccine availability tied to federal decisions under the Trump administration, per Oregon’s official government newsroom.

“If you want to get vaccinated before respiratory virus season, you can in Oregon,” Governor Kotek said, as cited by Oregon’s official government newsroom.

State health agencies are implementing recommendations from the West Coast Health Alliance (WCHA). The Oregon Health Authority (OHA) issued updated Medicaid guidance to cover WCHA-endorsed vaccines and published a FAQ resource to help residents navigate coverage. “As a physician, I swore an oath to do no harm—and we know vaccines are among the most powerful tools to prevent illness and save lives,” OHA Director Dr. Sejal Hathi said, according to Oregon’s official government newsroom, noting her perspective as both a public health leader and a parent.

The Department of Consumer and Business Services has also issued a bulletin requiring insurers to cover FDA-approved COVID-19 vaccines without cost-sharing, including for members of the Oregon Educators Benefit Board. Acting Insurance Commissioner TK Keen said this measure ensures consistency during the vaccination rollout.

The Oregon Board of Pharmacy has authorized pharmacists to prescribe and dispense COVID-19, influenza, and RSV vaccines. Executive Director Gary Runyon said pharmacists’ flexibility is crucial after federal delays slowed access. The Oregon Medical Board and the Oregon State Board of Nursing also authorized licensees to provide vaccines under WCHA guidelines.

Agencies involved in the initiative will hold a media availability at 5 p.m., hosted by OHA, to address questions. Additional vaccine guidance and recommendations are available on the websites of the respective state boards and agencies, as reported by Oregon’s official government newsroom.
