DENTON, Texas — Texas Governor Greg Abbott has made an announcement detailing a major financial boost for veteran services in the North Texas and Dallas-Fort Worth area. As reported by the Office of the Texas Governor, the Texas Veterans Commission (TVC) is set to distribute over $10.9 million in grants received by 37 organizations, which in turn is projected to benefit more than 4,500 veterans and their family members across 32 counties.
According to a statement obtained by the Office of the Texas Governor official news release from the Governor's website, this initiative is part of TVC's Grants Across Texas presentations. Texas prides itself on being a state that honors its service members, and this latest gesture aims to provide assistance in various forms including clinical counseling, service dog programs, and financial aid. Governor Abbott expressed Texas's gratitude towards veterans and emphasized the state's commitment to "support those who bravely put their life on the line to defend our nation and our freedom."
Marine veteran and TVC Commission Secretary Chuck Wright shared in the enthusiasm, acknowledging the organizations for their role in serving the veteran community. Grants were presented at the Denton County Courthouse, signifying a supportive stance from local to state levels. The list of beneficiaries span a broad spectrum of services, such as the Adaptive Training Foundation and Baylor Research Institute, which will receive $345,000 and $500,000 respectively for support and clinical counseling services, as detailed by the Office of the Texas Governor.
Other notable allocations include $350,000 to Canine Companions for Independence for its service dog program and $500,000 to the Garland Area Habitat for Humanity towards Housing for Texas Heroes. The funds, primarily generated by Texas Lottery's veteran-designated games, will be channeled into emergency financial assistance, transportation, legal services, and more, directly affecting a substantial veteran populace in Texas. While this is a significant amount, it's a part of a larger, record-breaking $46.3 million in grants announced earlier in May by Governor Abbott, set to impact nearly 40,000 veterans across the state, as per the Office of the Texas Governor.
