An Oxnard couple has been convicted of first-degree murder in a case that has gripped the community. The Ventura County District Attorney's Office announced that Margarita Jimenez and Jorge Garfias were found guilty of the murder of Yanelly Vargas, Garfias's former girlfriend. According to a release by the Ventura County District Attorney's office, the jury also found Jimenez guilty of personally and intentionally discharging a firearm during the crime. The pair were, however, acquitted of kidnapping charges.
In the late hours of March 17, 2024, an altercation and a gunshot prompted a 911 call just before midnight, as reported by the Oxnard Police Department. When officers arrived near East Wooley Road and Industrial Avenue, they found Vargas with a fatal gunshot wound. After being rushed to Ventura County Medical Center, the 30-year-old victim succumbed to her injuries, as detailed by the Ventura County District Attorney's office. During the investigation, it was revealed, found lured outside of an Oxnard bar, Vargas had been deceived into meeting her assailants by a text from Garfias. In the alley where the crime took place, a heinous beating preceded the fatal shot by Jimenez.
The investigative process unearthed crucial evidence, including surveillance footage capturing Jimenez chasing Vargas with a handgun. "Thank you to the Oxnard Police Department for their swift and thorough investigation to find the perpetrators of this horrific murder," Deputy District Attorney Hyla Schneir stated, expressing her gratitude for the diligent law enforcement work, as per the Ventura County District Attorney's office. The authorities also found a blood trail, acrylic nails matching those of Jimenez, and a blood-stained yellow rope near the victim, corroborating an act of violence that ended in a tragic loss of life.
An autopsy later confirmed that Vargas had suffered multiple blunt force injuries and signs of strangulation, compounding her fatal chest gunshot wound. "We appreciate the jury's attention and careful consideration of the evidence. We hope that this verdict brings a sense of closure to Yanelly's family and friends," Deputy District Attorney Schneir further commented. Senior Deputy District Attorney John Barrick and Deputy District Attorney Schneir successfully prosecuted the case and are now preparing for the court trial set for Monday, September 8.
