Public transportation patrons and the employees of the Waterfront shopping center in Homestead can breathe a sigh of relief. Pittsburgh Regional Transit (PRT) buses will continue to service the bustling commercial area, ensuring the vital connective tissue for community and commerce remains in place. According to a report by CBS News Pittsburgh, an agreement had been reached between Allegheny County and M&J Wilkow, the property owner, to keep PRT buses rolling into the Waterfront.
The news comes after initial concerns that PRT would be evicted from the space as of October 19. "I want to thank all the parties involved for their willingness to come to the table. We have an agreement in principle to find a long-term solution to keep PRT service inside The Waterfront, and in the interim, there will be continued service to existing stops," Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato stated in a message reported by WPXI. This interim arrangement prevents a potential gap in service that would have impacted over 400 weekday riders.
Engagement at the local political level played a crucial part in reversing the looming transportation crisis. Pennsylvania Senator Nick Pisciottano was recognized for his efforts in keeping the transit access available for those who frequent the shopping destination. "He's thankful that a resolution was reached that will keep transit access in place for shoppers and employees at the Waterfront," Pisciottano stated, according to CBS News Pittsburgh. This development underscores the significant role that such negotiations play in maintaining public services.
