The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) is temporarily shutting down the Nature & Science Center at Port Wonder to carry out essential repairs on the aquatic life support system, as per a recent notice. This closure won't impact the Children’s Museum of Southwest Louisiana, which will stay open for young explorers.

The necessary fixes involve a process where staff must drain the two large aquariums, rehome the fish to alternative exhibits and quarantine areas, and perform a thorough evaluation. A statement obtained by LDWF reveals that, "These efforts demand significant staff time and attention behind the scenes, limiting the ability to maintain normal operations for guests." Visitors should note that only the Nature & Science Center will be affected by this short-term closure.

During the repair period, it's reported that the top priority for the team remains the welfare and safety of the animals. "Animal care and safety remain our top priorities," LDWF assured, indicating that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure the continued well-being of the center's aquatic inhabitants.

The closure is expected to extend through Monday, September 29. Following the repairs, LDWF will conduct a system inspection to decide whether it's possible to resume standard operations. According to LDWF, pre-scheduled field trips won't be affected and will go on as arranged.

The public can look forward to the post-fix hurrah when normal hours of operation, Tuesday through Saturday from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, will resume at the center, with tickets available at $6 per person in the lobby.
