Morning efforts by firefighting teams prevented a vehicle fire from escalating into a wildland blaze near Santa Cruz. In a post from the official Facebook page of CAL FIRE's CZU San Mateo Santa Cruz Unit, crews were lauded for their "aggressive initial attack" after being dispatched to an automated crash detection near Dimeo Lane and Highway 1. The incident was quickly identified as an ignited vehicle accident, spreading to a nearby structure and a second vehicle.
The first responders, Santa Cruz City Fire Engine 3113, arrived swiftly to combat the flames, as detailed in the social media update. A CAL FIRE CZU Battalion Chief soon took command. Knowing the area had scarce hydrants, the on-site chief quickly called in additional support, including water tenders and engines to douse the flames.
The teamwork paid off. With CAL FIRE CZU's engines reinforcing the efforts, the fire was extinguished before it could threaten the wildland. Supporting the frontline were three CAL FIRE CZU engines, two from the Santa Cruz City Fire, and a water tender from the Scotts Valley Fire District and Santa Cruz County Volunteer Fire Company 37.
