Violence erupted from a road rage incident in Saugus, Massachusetts, resulting in one man being shot and another arrested. The confrontation took place on Lincoln Avenue in Cliftondale Square, near an ice cream shop. The victim, a 32-year-old Melrose resident, sustained a serious injury to his leg but is expected to survive. Authorities reported that both individuals were present when they arrived at the scene shortly after the incident which occurred just after 8 p.m. yesterday.
In an atmosphere where tempers flared, Stephen Cooper, 48, of Saugus, is said to have drawn a gun during the altercation and shot the younger man. Cooper was arrested and is facing multiple firearm-related charges. Despite being lawfully licensed to carry a gun, his permit is now pending suspension. Onlookers describe a scene where the two men were visibly engaged in a fight in the parking lot outside Banana Splitz, the details leading up to which remain unclear.
Witness accounts, including those from business owners in the vicinity, paint a picture of the aftermath. "And the guy that shot just stayed in the parking lot until the cops came," Jennifer Falzarano, a local business owner, recounted in a statement obtained by CBS Boston. "Just a lot of violence and road rage and fighting, I don't know, kind of a tough area these days," she added, highlighting the concerning trend of aggression in the area.
Further complicating the incident, the wounded man reportedly fled across the street following the shooting, as stated by Falzarano in an interview with WCVB, "The guy who got shot ran across the street and he was in the driveway bleeding." Police are continuing their investigation into the catalyst for the road rage episode and its violent escalation. Stephen Cooper is expected to appear in court the following Thursday to answer to the charges levied against him.
