The Roane County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning on social media about a rise in phone scams targeting residents. According to a Facebook post, scammers have been posing as law enforcement officers, government agencies, businesses, and even family members in an effort to trick victims into giving away personal or financial information.
In a pointed caution to the community, the Sheriff's Office reminded citizens that "We will never ask for payment or personal details over the phone." They urged residents to trust their instincts, advising that if a call seems suspicious, the safest response is to hang up right away. They emphasized that individuals should verify any claims by contacting the official number directly before taking action or sharing sensitive information.
The Sheriff's Office is actively trying to curb these fraudulent activities by asking the public to help spread the word. Sharing the warning on social media platforms extends the reach of their message, illuminating the scam and, ideally, precluding further victimization. "Help us spread the word — share this post so that friends, neighbors, and family members don’t become victims of these scams," the post urged.
