Michael Robert Potter, 38, from Rocky Top, Tennessee, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on Thursday for distributing child pornography. The sentence, given by U.S. District Judge Thomas A. Varlan, includes 188 months in prison and a 10-year supervised release. During this period, Potter must register as a sex offender and follow strict conditions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Investigators from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security – Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force identified Potter through his IP address during checks in April and May 2023. He was found with more than 20,000 images and 500 videos showing the sexual abuse of children. A federal search warrant in October 2023 confirmed the possession of this illegal material, leading to legal action, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
Potter pleaded guilty to one count of distributing child pornography under 18 U.S.C. § 2252A(a)(2), avoiding a trial. "U.S. Attorney Francis M. Hamilton of the Eastern District of Tennessee made the announcement," stating that the investigation was conducted by Homeland Security Investigations – Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the Knoxville Police Department, with Task Force Officer John Williams involved. Assistant United States Attorney Jennifer Kolman represented the government. The case is part of Project Safe Childhood, a program started in May 2006 to address child exploitation and abuse, as mentioned by the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
