A young Romanian national came clean on Tuesday about orchestrating a sprawling sleight-of-hand scheme that cheated stores out of a cool $130,000. Suras Rostas, who's just 21, owned up to his widespread deceit in a St. Louis federal court, where he pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud rooted in a year-long scam across the U.S.

It seems Rostas's scheme was fairly basic but ruthless in its execution, targeting Walmart cashiers in at least 18 states, hoodwinking them into handing over more money than due. After they scanned his items or were mid-way through processing an electronic transfer, Rostas tricked the cashiers into believing they were getting piles of cash equal to or greater than the transaction value. He'd hand over the stacks, withdraw them to "count" again, and deftly slide some bills into his pocket before asking for a full refund in cash, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Eastern District of Missouri.

Authorities caught up with his act, but not before his nationwide tour racked up at least 45 ill-gotten gains, impacting countless unwitting employees along the way. Now, the curtain's fallen and Rostas could face up to 20 years in prison for his performance, as well as a hefty $250,000 fine and likely deportation after his sentencing on December 11.

Handling the case alongside U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations were the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the Arnold Police Department, signaling a collaborative crackdown on sophisticated retail fraud. Assistant U.S. Attorney Justin Ladendorf, who's prosecuting the case, stated Rostas will also be ordered to pay back the stolen money in addition to whatever sentence the court decides.
