Two Sacramento women have been arrested in connection with a heartless scam targeting elderly residents of Marin County, according to an announcement by the Marin County Sheriff's Office. The women are accused of conning seniors out of thousands of dollars through an alleged bail fraud scheme. Citing the Sheriff's Office social media post, the victims were misled into believing their relatives were in desperate need of bail money for false criminal charges.
In one case, an 89-year-old was duped into handing over $19,000 cash to a courier who arrived at their home, discovering later that their loved one was never in trouble with the law. A similar scam claimed another victim, a 95-year-old resident, who was tricked into giving away $16,000 under nearly identical circumstances. Marin County Sheriff's Investigators eventually connected both cases and traced them back to a residence on Corabel Lane in Sacramento. Last Thursday, a search warrant led to the seizure of cash and the arrest of Belkis Gutierrez, 35, and Heydi Flores-Arias, 32.
As reported by the Marin County Sheriff's Office, the arrested women are facing charges of theft, elder abuse, and conspiracy. They were booked into Marin County Jail and are currently being held without bail. The cash found at the Sacramento residence is being investigated to determine its origin and to identify any additional victims. The Elk Grove Police Department is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
