Residents of Sacramento may encounter a DUI checkpoint late on Friday night. The Sacramento Police Department announced the checkpoint will run from 8:00 p.m. to 1:00 a.m. as part of efforts to identify impaired drivers and improve road safety. The location, which was not disclosed, was selected based on data showing a high number of alcohol- and drug-related accidents.
The Sacramento Police Department stated that the goal of upcoming DUI checkpoints is to "promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road," said Sergeant Anna Mahoney. She also stated, "Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk." The department’s post explained that driving under the influence includes alcohol, legally obtained marijuana, and certain medications that affect driving ability. It also noted that drivers found impaired could face about $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.
According to the Sacramento Police Department on their Facebook page, a DUI checkpoint will be held with funding from the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Officers will check drivers for alcohol, marijuana, and certain legal drugs that can impair driving as part of efforts to reduce traffic crashes.
