Fireworks at Polar Park in Worcester were intended to light up the sky in celebration following a Friday night ballgame, but the event took an unexpected turn. According to a press release from the ballpark, obtained by WCVB, the postgame fireworks display was abruptly cut short after two employees sustained superficial injuries.
The incident occurred after a series of fireworks tipped sideways in the centerfield bank and began to launch horizontally toward left field, prompting fireworks technicians to quickly discharge a safety switch. The team intended to deliver a full 11-minute show, but the display had to unexpectedly stop nearly two-thirds of the way through. As reported by Telegram, alarms immediately rang, with officials and staff ensuring that attendees departed safely—a testament to Polar Park's commitment to fan safety.
One of the injured employees, responsible for maintaining a fan "safety zone," received a superficial burn and was taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Later that evening, the individual was able to return to the ballpark, the ballpark's statement detailed. The other employee, working on the field with the intent to protect the grounds, was struck by debris, examined, and remained on the field after the incident.
Throughout the event, no fans were in proximity to the launch site, with only fireworks operators nearby. This was a measure taken as part of the ballpark's rigorous supervisory procedures, which include oversight by ballpark staff and the Worcester Fire Department. Fire officials, including Assistant Fire Chief Adam Roche, confirmed that they were on the scene for the ignition of the fireworks and are now in the process of investigating the cause of the incident. The Massachusetts Fire Marshal's office has also been duly notified to further look into the mishap.
Polar Park hosts fireworks displays after Friday night Worcester Red Sox games, which are generally a draw for fans seeking a blend of sport and spectacle. Unfortunately, on the night of Friday, where the Worcester Red Sox faced an extra innings defeat against the Rochester Red Wings with an 8-7 score, the splendor of fireworks was overshadowed by this safety snafu.
