San Antonio is set to transform a portion of Houston Street into a pedestrian-only zone on September 19 during International Park(ing) Day, an event demonstrating the potential of urban spaces prioritizing people over cars. In an effort to temporarily reimagine the asphalt expanse between Main Street and Flores Street as a place of social connection and innovation, the block will be closed off to vehicles from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for a celebration that promises to intertwine art, play, and community-centric design. This initiative, as reported by the City of San Antonio's website, is a collaboration between local organizations, including Centro San Antonio, the 80|20 Foundation, and the Texas Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Drawing inspiration from San Antonio’s Complete Streets and Transit-Oriented Development policies, the event aims to not only celebrate but also to actually showcase the possibilities of crafting a streetscape designed for the safety and enjoyment of all, not just those behind the wheel. The mock-up presented will represent a slice of the VIA Green Line and its surrounding walkable area. Vendors and city departments will populate the Houston Street route, offering interactive experiences and information on the city's vision for public transit and pedestrian-friendly spaces.

"National Park(ing) Day allows us to show the public what happens when streets are designed safer for everyone – from bus transit to pedestrians, to bike riders and drivers," mentioned Catherine "Cat" Hernandez, the Director of the City’s Transportation Department, in a statement obtained by the City of San Antonio's website. "Think of it as a street fair, showcasing the best in designing communities around transit hubs."

The theme of this year's Park(ing) Day is "Curb the Power: Micro Acts of Civil Joy." As part of the festivities, visitors will be encouraged to actively explore and engage with the space, armed with passports that they can fill out to win prizes. These passports can be stamped at various participating booths, incentivizing guests to immerse themselves in the breadth of activities offered. Trish DeBerry, President and CEO of Centro San Antonio, stressed the importance of such imaginative undertakings, saying, "Park(ing) Day is about reimagining what our streets can be; places for people and creativity." DeBerry also emphasized the organization's mission "to keep downtown clean, safe, and welcoming," according to the same City of San Antonio's website.
