A 21-year-old man was critically injured after being shot in the face during an attempted robbery near the restrooms at Civic Park at Hemisfair late Friday night, according to San Antonio police. Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of Hemisfair Plaza Way around 11:30 p.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound; a 19-year-old suspect was tracked down and arrested a short time later.
According to KSAT, the San Antonio Police Department said the shooter was attempting to rob the victim before the gun went off. Officers found a firearm nearby, and a preliminary SAPD report described the man's injury as a gunshot wound to his upper body; police at the scene said he had allegedly been shot in the face. No other people were injured in the shooting, and the man was taken to a local hospital. The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information was immediately available.
Suspect Caught Near Federal Building Half a Mile Away
Officers and bike patrol units located and arrested the 19-year-old suspect near a federal building at 615 E. Houston St., roughly half a mile from where the shooting happened near the Civic Park restrooms, according to KENS 5. The station reports the suspect allegedly shot the victim in the face during the attempted robbery before fleeing the park on foot, eventually making it toward the downtown building before officers caught up with him.
Just over an hour after the Hemisfair shooting, a separate incident unfolded a short distance away: a woman was grazed in the foot by a gunshot in a downtown parking lot near East Houston and Hackberry streets at approximately 12:56 a.m., the same KENS 5 report notes. Police had not identified a suspect or motive in that parking lot shooting as of Saturday morning, and it was not immediately described as connected to the Civic Park case.
Second Deadly Incident at the Same Park in Under Two Weeks
Friday's shooting marks the second shooting along Hemisfair Plaza Way in under two weeks. On August 30, 35-year-old Jonathan Alderete was fatally shot near the park's basketball court following an argument over property, as reported by the San Antonio Express-News. A 23-year-old suspect was arrested on September 3 and charged with murder in connection with that killing, the paper later reported.

Civic Park at Hemisfair is a $28 million, nine-acre green space built on the historic 1968 World's Fair grounds, with its first phase opening in September 2023 and Phase 2 completed in March 2025, according to the San Antonio Report. The park was designed as the centerpiece of a major public-private effort to revitalize downtown San Antonio.
Curfew Debate Resurfaces as Jazz Festival Looms
City officials and Hemisfair redevelopment leaders have previously considered removing the park from the city's list of curfew-exempt spaces to let police enforce an 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. curfew over late-night safety concerns, the San Antonio Report reported in June 2024. At the time, Hemisfair's posted operating hours ran from 5 a.m. to midnight, but the park lacked dedicated security staff to enforce them.
The stakes are rising with the calendar: Civic Park is set to host the 43rd annual Jazz'SAlive festival on September 25-26, an event expected to draw roughly 15,000 attendees, as Hoodline has reported. Under Texas Penal Code Section 29.03, robbery that causes serious bodily injury or involves a deadly weapon is classified as aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony punishable by 5 to 99 years or life in state prison and a fine of up to $10,000, according to the Saputo Toufexis law firm.
A Citywide Decline in Crime, but Downtown Flashpoints Persist
The violence comes even as San Antonio's broader crime numbers have been trending downward. An SAPD report presented to the City Council showed overall crime across the city fell by more than 13% in 2025 compared to the year before, with total reported offenses dropping from over 143,000 to around 124,000, according to KSAT. Homicides fell by an additional 8% during the first half of 2026, extending a decline that has pushed homicide rates 12% below pre-pandemic levels, per an analysis by the Council on Criminal Justice cited by the San Antonio Report.
Still, city open data tells a more mixed story for crimes against persons specifically. Official City of San Antonio records updated this month show SAPD recorded 18,684 crimes against persons between January and July 2026, slightly higher than the 18,347 recorded over the same period in 2025, even as property crimes dropped sharply from 54,390 to 48,803. It's a tension that has repeatedly surfaced downtown, where Hoodline has also reported on a man stabbed at a bus stop in a suspected robbery in May. Whether San Antonio leaders will revive the curfew debate for Hemisfair, and how the 21-year-old victim is faring, remain open questions as the investigation continues.
