The San Diego City Council is poised to tackle the question of paid parking at the San Diego Zoo, an issue that has sparked a range of opinions from zoo visitors. As it stands, parking at the zoo is free. Still, recent budgetary challenges facing the city have led to new revenue proposals, including parking charges at city beaches, parks, and now, potentially, the zoo, which the San Diego Wildlife Alliance is seeking to align through lease amendments with the City Council, CBS 8 reported.
The San Diego Zoo's parking lot, integrated with Balboa Park's broader plan to institute parking fees, could become the next venue for the city's financial recoupment efforts, with the city hoping to raise an estimated $3 million from these charges, ABC 10News reported. In the face of this change, visitors expressed concerns, one commenting, "I think it's kind of sad that you know, it's getting to the point where everywhere you go you have to pay for everything." Meanwhile, the City Council's vote is slated for the afternoon of Sept. 15, indicating the rapidly approaching decision.
In response to the proposed changes, the SDZWA has been "in constant communication and collaboration with City officials," as CBS 8 outlines, to ensure that any changes to parking will be thoughtfully integrated with concessions for their members, team members, and volunteers.
