A San Diego man has been sentenced to a lengthy term in prison for the murder of his sister's former boyfriend after being on the lam for nearly two years in Mexico. Raymond Lynde, 33, received a sentence of 51 years to life for second-degree murder in the deadly 2020 attack on Ariel Burquez, a 23-year-old man who was brutally stabbed outside an apartment complex in Chula Vista.
According to a news release from the San Diego County District Attorney's Office, Lynde had only recently emerged from a 12-year stint in prison for armed robberies in Orange County before he lay in wait for Burquez and stabbed him 28 times. DA Summer Stephan was quoted in the release, stating, "This was a savage murder that was motivated by animosity and revenge." She expressed hope that the sentencing would provide justice for the victim's family.
Lynde's evasion of law enforcement came to an end when Mexican authorities located him, and the U.S. Marshals Service’s Fugitive Task Force took him into custody at the San Ysidro Port of Entry in May 2022. During the trial, tensions within family histories surfaced; Lynde’s sister recounted a brief, troubled romance with Burquez, which had ended a year before the murder. It was revealed that Burquez had allegedly been involved in vandalism and had even reportedly shot at her in the weeks preceding his death.
Lynde claimed the stabbing was an act of self-defense, despite the overwhelming evidence and the violent nature of the attack. After the incident, he attempted to cover his tracks by disposing of the murder weapon, concealing the bloodied clothing, and fleeing to Mexico. Deputy District Attorney Cassandra Alfaro, from the DA’s South Bay Branch, handled the prosecution of the case, which has now seen one more fugitive extradited from Mexico—making it the 11th successful extradition to San Diego County for the DA’s Office in the past five years.
