The San Diego County Sheriff's Office recently provided an update on the investigation into the death of 46-year-old James Pittman, who died after an incident at the Vista Detention Facility. According to a statement released by the Sheriff's Office, deputies had discovered Pittman in a distressed state on February 14, after he had apparently fallen from the top bunk in his cell. Pittman's cellmate alerted deputies to the situation, and they responded immediately, finding him unconscious on the floor.
Deputies quickly attended to Pittman, who seemed disoriented and confused, and swiftly transported him to the facility's medical clinic. The Vista Fire Department paramedics then took him to the Palomar Medical Center. Following a medical procedure, Pittman was admitted to the ICU, where he remained until his death on February 27. It's noted that Pittman was in custody on a murder charge since January 3, 2023, prior to the unfortunate event leading to his medical emergency and subsequent death.
The Sheriff's Office has extended its sympathies to the Pittman family and has provided support through a Family Liaison Officer during this challenging period. In adhering to protocol for in-custody deaths, the Citizens' Law Enforcement Review Board (CLERB) was notified of the incident, and the Sheriff's Homicide Unit has conducted a thorough investigation into the details surrounding Pittman's demise to ensure a comprehensive examination of the incident.
An autopsy carried out by the Medical Examiner's Office concluded that the cause of death was blunt force injury of the head, ruling the manner of death as accidental. The findings from this investigation appear to close the case on any foul play surrounding Pittman's death. However, the investigation will aim to examine all aspects of this incident thoroughly, ensuring full clarity on the circumstances that led to the tragic outcome for Pittman while in custody.
