The San José Police Department recently apprehended three individuals linked to a series of strong-armed robberies that targeted online marketplace transactions, per an official release on the SJPD website. The suspects, identified as 19-year-olds Isaiah Esquibel and Osvaldo Diaz Gomez, along with an unnamed 18-year-old accomplice, allegedly engaged in a scheme that involved luring sellers with the promise of a purchase, only to rob them upon meeting.
On June 11, a victim, attempting to sell a pair of shoes valued at nearly $480, was assaulted and robbed after arranging a meeting via an online application. Later, another victim was forcefully deprived of a $3,000 watch in a parking lot; these were the incidents that set off a series of investigations leading to the arrests. A loaded firearm was found during the search of Esquibel's residence when he was arrested on August 19, while a second loaded firearm and additional firearm parts were recovered at the residence of the juvenile suspect who was apprehended along with Diaz on August 22.
All suspects are facing charges, including robbery and firearm-related crimes, with the adult suspects being held at the Santa Clara County Main Jail, and the minor. However, 18 at the time of arrest, was initially taken to the Main Jail but subsequently transferred to Juvenile Hall. Despite their young ages, their alleged actions carry the substantial weight of adult consequences, potentially altering life courses over the pursuit of fast cash and luxury items.
The alarming series of events has prompted the SJPD to issue safety tips for the community when dealing with online marketplaces. These include meeting in public, never going alone, trusting your instincts, and keeping records of all transactions.
Community vigilance remains crucial in curbing such crimes, and the SJPD encourages anyone with information related to these or similar cases to come forward and contact Detective Ledesma via email [email protected] or 408-277-4166.
