The Santa Rosa Police Department reported yesterday that they had apprehended 32-year-old Jabari Simms-Youth on charges of driving under the influence of drugs and possession of narcotics, specifically fentanyl. Civilians patrolling Highway 12 during rush hour first raised the alarm about a grey Ford Fusion repeatedly hitting the center median. Officers later tracked down Simms-Youth at a nearby gas station, where his mannerisms betrayed a lack of sobriety.
An on-site DUI investigation by a motor officer confirmed the suspicion that Simms-Youth was driving impaired. Detailing the incident, the Santa Rosa Police social media post narrated that the officers at the intersection of Highway 12 and Mission Blvd took the driver into custody, where he was also found to be possessing fentanyl. Simms-Youth, later on, faced charges for both the DUI and drug possession.
The arrest occurred amid heightened vigilance by the Santa Rosa Police around school zones. Since schools reopened three weeks prior, additional enforcement to ensure student safety has led to many citations. The same Santa Rosa Police post revealed that over 75 citations have been issued by motor officers, alongside 13 parking citations, several warnings to pedestrians, and 3 DUI arrests. Targeting 27 schools across the city, these traffic safety operations are a reminder of the heightened risks and enforcement activities typical of the school-year rhythm.
