Seattle's Mayor Bruce Harrell has leaped into the future with the city's new approach to artificial intelligence, unveiling the 2025-2026 AI Plan, which sets the city's sights on becoming a beacon of responsible AI usage, as per Seattle TechTalk. The initiative aims to enhance city services, generate jobs, and establish Seattle as a model for innovation, equitable opportunities, and efficient advancements, using AI as the primary tool for these improvements.

Among the highlights of the announcement are collaborations involving academia, experts, and the community to shape AI policies; these established policies reflect Seattle's values of innovation, accountability, and security, something which the city started as early as April 2023, and the groundwork laid then is now bearing fruit after implementation in October of the same year. The plan announced includes comprehensive training for city employees and a commitment to working with labor partners in a professional development capacity, protecting jobs while upgrading the delivery of essential city services.

Active pilots are already showing promise, including the CivCheck partnership to shorten permit processing times, transportation AI that pinpoints engineering improvements to reduce crash risks, and Lime’s collaboration with the city to keep shared bikes and scooters properly parked, ensuring sidewalks remain accessible—a multifaceted approach to integrating AI across city operations, as reported by Seattle TechTalk.

On the community front, a new hackathon series is bringing together entrepreneurs, tech experts, students, and city staff to develop AI-powered solutions for citywide priorities. The first, held on September 11, focused on enhancing the Youth Connector web application to improve access to youth enrichment programs. The next, scheduled for October 9, will address streamlining the permitting process—collaborative sessions that reflect Seattle’s innovative spirit and co-create the tools the city needs today.
