Early Tuesday morning, a semi tractor-trailer was involved in a significant accident when it veered off the Interstate 270 bridge and onto 56th Ave. below. The incident, which occurred around 4:45 a.m., required emergency services to navigate through debris and damaged structures to reach the scene. Firefighters from the South Adams County Fire Department arrived to find the vehicle with heavy damage. In their effort to rescue the trapped driver, images of the gnarled metal and strewn cargo conveyed a scene of quiet discord against the backdrop of the predawn silence.
Commerce City Police Department reported, via Denver7, that despite the dramatic nature of the crash, the driver sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by Platte Valley ambulance to a nearby hospital. While the driver's condition stabilizes, East 56th Avenue bore the weight of the aftermath, closed between Eudora and Sand Creek streets, as noted by KDVR. Police mentioned that there "appears" to be some sort of structural damage, but did not provide details on the extent of it. A photo shared suggests that two trailers were involved; one was visible on its side.
As the morning continued, the ramifications of the event on local traffic became increasingly apparent. No other vehicles were reported to have been involved in the accident. The prolonged closure of East 56th Avenue, expected to last "for some time," is compounded by ongoing investigations and necessary clear-up operations, as per 9NEWS.
