During his tour at the University of Arizona's research facilities, discussions unfolded around the significance of safeguarding federal research investments, despite the persistence of funding cuts.
Meeting with the College Democrats at the university, Gallego heard firsthand the stress that the increasing cost of living was placing on their shoulders. "What you guys are feeling right now, you’re right. It is that bad out there," Senator Gallego told them during the meet, underscoring a grim reality many young people are facing today. The Senator has put lowering the costs at the forefront, advocating for fiscal relief across the basic necessities of life as his main battle cry in Washington. With the introduction of bipartisan efforts like the Uplifting First-Time Homebuyers Act, Gallego seeks to bridge the gap towards homeownership and wealth building for younger generations.
Later, Senator Gallego joined Tucson's elected figures and community and business leaders for a roundtable discussion that reiterated cost reduction as a priority. Crafting a common ground on fiscal strategies, Gallego expressed, "How can we actually get together to lower costs? Maybe we don’t have to agree on everything, but let’s figure out the areas we can agree on so we can help bring down costs [for] everyday Arizonans because that would probably be the quickest thing we can do to make people’s lives a lot better." This dialogue extended to other significant subjects such as strengthening the middle class, improving educational access, providing affordable health care, and generating quality jobs in the region.
The Senator’s visit concluded with an assembly with Pima County supervisors and local populace to assess the deployment of federal investments to ameliorate broadband access in Southern Arizona, shared Gallego's office. Here, community members, who the Trump administration's budget cuts are jeopardizing the Pima County Digital Equity Program, discussed the ongoing efforts and challenges to bolster the broadband infrastructure, with a focus on underserved areas.
