The Shelby County Health Department has released its updated mosquito control schedule in response to eight reported cases of West Nile Virus (WNV) in the county this year. Beginning September 22, truck-mounted spraying will take place in various areas throughout the county. The sprays will use EPA-approved insecticides to target adult mosquitoes known to transmit the virus, as part of efforts to reduce the local mosquito population and limit the spread of WNV.

The treatment follows a recent update from the Shelby County Health Department, which advises residents to stay vigilant and use insect repellents containing DEET when outdoors. To combat West Nile Virus (WNV)—a disease that can range from symptomless to severe, particularly in individuals over 60—the county plans to conduct thorough spraying in affected ZIP Code areas. Each area is scheduled to receive at least two treatments during the peak mosquito season. On Monday, weather permitting, spraying will occur between 7:15 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. in communities within the 38103, 38107, 38108, and 38105 ZIP Codes. The full schedule and route maps are available on the Health Department’s website.

The Shelby County Health Department has also considered the health of residents with chronic conditions, advising those with asthma and other respiratory issues to stay indoors when sprayings are taking place. Additionally, individuals who wish to opt out of the spraying program can contact the Vector Control Program directly. The department acknowledges public concerns while implementing these preventative measures.

The mosquito spraying schedule is subject to change based on weather conditions. Treatments will be canceled if rain chances exceed 65%, wind speeds are above 11 mph, or temperatures fall below 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Residents are encouraged to stay informed about schedule updates and possible cancellations by following the Shelby County Health Department on social media platforms such as X, Facebook, and Instagram.
