Last Monday evening, a domestic disturbance escalated quickly into a tense barricade situation in Guerneville, Sonoma County. A report was made to the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office concerning 50-year-old Mauricio Flores, who was allegedly on his way to harm his daughter and her mother. Deputies discovered Flores's vehicle outside his domicile in Santa Rosa, where a standoff ensued. The Sheriff's Office, as per a social media post, disclosed, "Flores briefly exited the home before retreating inside, barricading himself, and refusing to comply."
SWAT teams and negotiators labored to forthrightly engage with Flores, who was both armed and reportedly making suicidal threats. After protracted negotiations, which included a Spanish-speaking deputy, Flores intimated that he had wounded himself. As per the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office, "At one point, Flores appeared to have sustained an injury to his upper chest after making statements suggesting he had shot himself." It was later confirmed that Flores had indeed inflicted a gunshot wound upon himself.
As the situation developed, Flores eventually collapsed in the doorway, allowing deputies to apprehend and immediately administer medical aid. The Sheriff's Office lauded the responders, saying, "Deputies moved in, secured Flores in handcuffs, and immediately rendered medical aid, including the application of two chest seals." Thankfully, the injuries were determined to be non-life-threatening at the hospital.
The detectives, part of the Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault (DVSA) Unit, retrieved a firearm from Flores's residence under a search warrant. Flores, currently hospitalized, will inevitably be booked into the county jail with charges including making death threats, resisting arrest, and his bail was set to steeply rise to $500,000. In a note of commendation, the Sheriff's Office recognized "the professionalism of responding deputies, negotiators, and the Special Operations Unit for their coordinated response that ensured the safety of community members."
