A South Los Angeles tow truck driver finds himself in cuffs after federal authorities charged him with stealing government property. The man, identified as Bobby Nunez, was arrested for allegedly towing away a law enforcement vehicle during an immigration arrest operation earlier in the month, as reported by the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California.
Nunez, 33, was apprehended today and is set to appear in court this afternoon. According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Central District of California, Nunez disrupted officers in downtown Los Angeles on August 15 as they were detaining a Colombian national, Tatiana Mafla-Martinez, for being in the country illegally. The law enforcement vehicles, their emergency lights flashing, had successfully corralled Martinez's vehicle to prevent her escape after exiting a parking structure of a high-end residential complex.
The case took another twist on August 17, when law enforcement located Nunez’s tow truck at the same apartment complex. If convicted of stealing government property, he could face up to 10 years in prison, the statutory maximum. Homeland Security Investigations continues to probe the matter, which is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Neil P. Thakor of the General Crimes Section, Public Information Officer Ciaran McEvoy said in a recent press release.
