St. Augustine's literacy landscape is about to gain a charming new feature with the announcement that a Little Library will be unveiled at Project S.W.I.N.G. The community-driven event, slotted for next Friday at 10 am, aims to enrich the lives of local youth and promote the importance of education. According to a City of St. Augustine announcement, the ceremony will be led by Commissioner Cynthia Garris and Brother Sherman Riley from the Sigma Pi Lambda Chapter of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and the public is encouraged to join in on the festivities.
Ketterlinus Elementary School's Third Grade Class, who will bring books to supplement the Little Library, is set to be in attendance. Clearly proud of their contribution, they will see firsthand how small acts of charity can foster a thriving community spirit. Jessica Bryce, of Bryce Brushworks, will contribute her artistic talents by hand-painting the Little Library, extending a personal touch to a community symbol.
The library's dedication pays homage to Dr. Otis Mason and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., two notable fraternity members whose legacies are intertwined with the fight for educational equality and civil rights. This Little Library forms part of Alpha Phi Alpha's "Go To High School, Go To College" national program and supports their Splendid Gents Mentoring Program, dedicated to guiding middle school boys towards academic achievement and positive growth.
For those looking to attend, the Historical Downtown Parking Facility stands at the ready on 1 Cordova Street, providing easy access to the playground's newest addition. Registered St. Johns County residents can take advantage of the ParkStAug resident discount program, securing parking at a reduced fee of $3, thereby making it hassle-free for locals to participate in the library's inaugural event.
The involvement of the Sigma Pi Lambda Chapter underscores the fraternity's perpetual commitment to service, mentorship, and scholarship in Florida's First Coast region. Since its establishment, Sigma Pi Lambda has persisted in bolstering the fraternity's national objectives and cultivating an environment where leadership, brotherhood, and academic excellence are not merely concepts, but actionable community standards.
