Waning daylight hours mean it's essential for bicyclists in St. Johns County—and throughout Florida—to gear up with the proper lights and reflectors as mandated by state law. A recent social media post from St. Johns County's official account reminds riders that, with evenings drawing in, "Between sunset and sunrise any time you ride, and that’s the law," visibility is key for safety.

Florida statutes stipulate that all bikes must be equipped with a white front lamp that can be seen from at least 500 feet away. These are not just suggestions but requirements to safely, and legally, navigate the roads during hours of darkness. In accordance to the post shared by St. Johns County, riders should also ensure their bicycles have "a red rear lamp and a red rear reflector, each visible from at least 600 feet to the rear." It's made clear that both these elements are non-negotiable for the after-sundown cyclist.

When conditions are less than ideal even during the day—think rain, fog, or general low visibility scenarios—the need to be seen doesn't take a back seat. Cyclists are urged to make certain they are visible at all times. And for those on e-bikes, the rules don't change; the lighting requirements remain the same as those for standard bicycles.

Placement of these safety devices is also to not be taken lightly. The front lamp should be mounted in a position, like the handlebar, fork crown, or helmet, where it points ahead without obstruction and doesn't blind others. "Aim it slightly downward so you light the road without blinding oncoming people," the St. Johns County's social media post advises. As for the rear lamp, it's best mounted "on your seat post, rear rack, or helmet/pack – as high and centered as practical – pointing straight back." Ensuring the rear reflector is clean, upright, and visible is equally crucial. These small but vital pieces of bike gear play a significant role in keeping riders safe on their journeys, whether to work, school, or leisure rides in the twilight.
