A somber atmosphere enveloped the streets of Stone Mountain as a procession for Master Firefighter Preston Fant, who lost his life in the line of duty, took place on Wednesday. The 21-year veteran of the DeKalb Fire Rescue was tragically killed on Monday after he became trapped trying to save a colleague during a warehouse fire, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta. Fant, who leaves behind a wife and five children, was escorted from the vicinity of the DeKalb County Medical Examiner’s Office to the West Cobb Funeral Home in Marietta.
Quite apart from the keenly felt loss of a public servant, onlookers expressed a sense of personal connection to the late firefighter. As captured by Decaturish, one man, a firetruck mechanic, remembered sharing laughs with Fant when he would visit for maintenance work. Although no further details regarding funeral plans were announced, community members have begun to gather not only to mourn but to extend a gesture of solidarity and reverence.
DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, in her remarks about the incident, referred to Fant's unyielding bravery, stating, “Firefighter Fant had the courage to do what is required. He ran towards danger and in so doing, he succumbed to his injuries.” Fully acknowledging the extent of the tragedy, DeKalb County Fire Chief Darnell Fullum endeavored to keep the bereft family enveloped in the prayers and thoughts of the community. Furthermore, an online fundraiser has been established to provide financial support to Fant’s family in the wake of this heartbreaking event, as noted by Decaturish.
Fullum, in a heart-wrenching testimony, recalled Fant as more than just a dedicated public servant. Struggling to maintain his composure, he shared personal anecdotes that shed light on the kind of man Fant was: “Where I normally saw him was on a fire scene, and after the incident was over, he would ask me about my son,” Fullum told Decaturish. “He got to know my son, and that demonstrated who he was. Only a person who cares about family asks about other people's families.”
