Earlier today, a tense standoff unfolded in the 1600 block of Hampton as District 2 officers were summoned to a report of gunfire. According to the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, shots were fired into an apartment unit, prompting a rapid response just after 5:30 a.m.
When the initial patrol arrived, they discovered signs of a shooting and soon after, identified an armed man near the entrance of the loft building. The police say he fired a shot which narrowly missed an officer. The suspect, a 31-year-old male resident of the building, defied officers' commands to drop the gun, initiating a brief on-foot pursuit after discharging his weapon.
Despite the dangerous confrontation, the suspect was apprehended without injury. Prior to his engagement with the officers, the preliminary investigation suggests he unlawfully entered a neighbor's apartment, seized a firearm, and proceeded to fire multiple shots inside the unoccupied unit, also targeting the door of another apartment. This chaotic sequence of events culminated in his near-fatal encounter with the law enforcement personnel.
Concurrently, two additional officers were called to the scene to provide backup. However, making their passage over a fence, they sustained injuries. As is standard in such cases, the Force Investigations Unit has taken over to further delve into the particulars of this incident.
