In a reveal that underscores the persistence of retail theft rings exploiting online marketplaces, the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office has detailed the arrest of a suspect involved in selling nearly $39,000 worth of stolen goods via the internet. The investigation, which a detective led from the office, tracked down a sizable cache of items ranging from high-end home appliances to common hardware store merchandise recently pilfered from several stores and private residences.
The social media post from the Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office outlined the breakdown of the stolen goods: over $12,000 worth of products from The Home Depot, goods exceeding $11,000 from Lowe's Home Improvement, $9,500 from Target, and $5,800 from two home burglaries in San Jose and Los Altos. The items included power tools, toolboxes, and larger home appliances like washers and dryers. The suspect in custody, 47-year-old Phong Mac, faces multiple charges, including retail theft and receiving stolen property.
Mac was arrested and subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail. Despite the progress in this case, authorities indicated that several other suspects involved in the operation remain at large. The Sheriff's Office used the announcement to remind the public to exercise caution when encountering online deals that appear excessively favorable, suggesting the potential for those bargains to be rooted in criminal activity.
