The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety has apprehended two individuals in relation to an attempted homicide that took place on the Fourth of July, a day more commonly spent in celebration rather than recovery from violence. According to a social media post from the Sunnyvale Public Safety Officers Association, Mauricio Murillo of Santa Clara and Donte Johnson of Sunnyvale were taken into custody today without incident and subsequently booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.

The initial incident was at Fairwood Park, which ended in violence when an altercation between two groups escalated into a stabbing and a shooting, according to the Sunnyvale Public Safety Officers Association.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m., when one suspect reportedly used a knife to inflict a deep laceration on a victim. Another suspect allegedly pistol-whipped a second victim before firing a shot that struck the individual in the wrist.

Despite their injuries, both victims declined to cooperate with officers at the scene. One victim was transported to a hospital after a female associate called 911. The second victim arrived separately at Kaiser Santa Clara, where he claimed his injuries were caused by an accidental fall rather than an assault. Neither provided specific details about the attack.

Public safety officials have thanked the community for its support and urged anyone with information to assist in the investigation. Detective C. Bishop is the point of contact for tips and can be reached at (408) 730-7100.
