Travelers in Rhea and Cumberland Counties should prepare for slowdowns as the Tennessee Department of Transportation (TDOT) rolls out a series of bridge inspections starting next week. Commuters will encounter lane closures and potential delays while TDOT examines the structural integrity of several bridges.
Tomorrow, September 8, the SR 30 bridge over Richland Creek in Rhea County will be under the microscope. Eastbound traffic on SR 30 will need to navigate a closure from 2nd Avenue to Delaware Avenue/Back Valley Road from 9:30 a.m. until noon. The agency plans to station flaggers to help direct vehicles around the work zone, according to TDOT's announcement.
The following day, on Tuesday, September 9, TDOT will set their sights on the I-40 bridge over the Obed River in Cumberland County. Inspections will cause the right lane and shoulder of I-40 East to be shut down from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., and the same for I-40 West but from 12:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Continuing on Wednesday, September 10, a similar routine will go into effect for the I-40 bridge over Drowning Creek, with closures impacting both directions at mile marker 315, following the same timing pattern established the previous day. The need for these inspections are critical for ensuring the safety and reliability of these vital thoroughfares.
Drivers are advised to tread with caution and anticipate delays during these inspections. If adverse weather or other complications arise, the timings may shift. TDOT encourages drivers to stay informed using their SmartWay Map or by dialing 511. And a reminder: the state's Move Over Law demands space for highway workers and emergency vehicles, breaching it can lead to penalties including jail time and fines.
