A teenage student was taken into police custody at a Bradford High School football game after being discovered with a gun in his backpack, Bradford County Sheriff's Office reports.
At approximately 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, amidst the spirited echoes of a middle school football game, an anonymous tip prompted a school administrator to approach the 13-year-old, who was found with a gun case within the confines of his backpack and a BB gun tucked in his waistband, News4JAX detailed.
The teen, said to be homeschooled, had been instructed by his mother to refrain from taking the gun with him before she left for work; this instruction, as the event unfolded, would be acknowledged with the weight of hindsight, "Upon completion of all paperwork, he was delivered to the Department of Juvenile Justice pending court proceedings," the sheriff's office stated in a report obtained by News4JAX.
First Coast News reported that after the School Protection Deputy made contact with the boy's parents, the teenager's actions were met with the gravity of legal consequences, marking an uneasy interception in what should have been an evening dedicated to youthful sporting endeavors it appears that the apprehension served as a poignant reminder of the ever-present concerns regarding safety within school environments.
The incident raises further concerns over juvenile access to firearms and the potential for tragedy within educational and recreational settings, WCJB noted with the arrest of the 13-year-old highlighting the vigilant stance school officials and law enforcement must maintain in order to prevent potential harm stemming from such weapons, even those intended to be nonlethal.
